Tummy Tuck vs. Mini-Tummy Tuck - Which is Right for Me?

When considering undergoing a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure to eliminate excess skin and fat or reducing the appearance of a distended abdominal wall, there are several side effects and risks that may be reduced with a mini-tummy tuck. Reduced scarring and smaller or reduced incision lines are typically the biggest difference between the two procedures.
A mini-tummy tuck is much less invasive than a traditional tummy tuck. Traditional abdominoplasty procedures require an incision in the lower abdomen from hip to hip, whereas a mini-tummy tuck imposes a smaller incision and thus less scarring. It is often referred to as a "scarless" procedure due to this fact.
Mini-tummy tucks are usually administered with only a local anesthetic, reducing the risks associated with undergoing general anesthesia with a traditional procedure. This may be a concern for patients who exhibit characteristics which may lead to anesthesia-related complications and side effects.
After making the incision, both procedures allow for removal of excess fat, then the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened. Liposuction may be paired with a tummy tuck or mini-tummy tuck before excess skin is eliminated and the incision is sutured.
Tummy tucks will also include an incision around the navel to reposition it or remove it completely before crafting a new one. Mini-tummy tucks do not involve navel repositioning, thereby effectively reducing bruising, swelling and recovery time.
Your cosmetic surgeon will best be able to determine if a mini-tummy tuck will achieve your desired body-contouring results, as well as if you are a better candidate for this less-invasive procedure. Typically, those with less excess skin in the abdominal area may be able to consider a mini-tummy tuck versus a traditional tummy tuck.
